In October 2019, Stack’s Bowers Galleries hosted its first Precious Metals Auction in response to strong demand for precious metals in the 2010s. Conceived to help clients buy bullion with no buyer’s fee, PMAs were initially hosted monthly, then twice a month, and since late 2022 they are conducted weekly This affords precious metal stackers and bullion collectors, as well as collectors of relatively common precious metal U.S. and world coins, the opportunity to add to their holdings in a distinctive sales format. Collectors keen to build their stacks of precious metal or pick up common collectible gold and silver coins can do so less expensively than through regular coin auctions. Bids are recorded as percentages of a lot’s “effective metal price” and we do not charge our regular 20% buyer’s premium. Precious metal “spot” prices are fixed immediately before each sale.
These sales include raw and slabbed coins, items in their original mint packaging and precious metals in other forms, including bars and ingots. The average PMA sale offers hundreds of ounces of gold and thousands of ounces of silver, plus items in platinum and palladium. New material is constantly appearing and those interested in expanding their precious metal holdings don’t have long to wait for the next opportunity.
