Beautiful 1875 Cheyenne, Wyoming $5 Offered in August Auction

Our Summer Global Showcase U.S. Currency Auction is shaping up to be an impressive event. The sale will be posted to our website by July 20, with catalogs mailed around that time. We are offering three special collections this sale: one is of serial number errors from the “Mismacthed Serial Number Collection,” the second is large size Federal Reserve Notes & Federal Reserve Bank Notes from “The Boston Proper Collection,” and the third is consecutive cut sheets from the “This Buck Stopped Here Collection.” Our large size section is also something to keep an eye on, as are the National Banknotes. One impressive National is this Cheyenne, Wyoming 1875 $5 from the Stock Growers National Bank (Charter 2652) in a PMG Very Fine 30 grade.

This is an elusive charter to acquire from Wyoming’s capital. The Stock Growers NB of Cheyenne was chartered in 1882 and issued $1,103,140 during its operating tenure, surviving the Panic of 1893 along with the Great Depression. Reported outstanding in 1935 was a mere $4,420. 1875 Series notes are quite scarce for the state, and this example is sure to draw attention from Wyoming collectors. The designs are dark offering good appeal for the assigned grade. The oversized signatures are fully legible in a dark brown ink. This will be the first time that we have offered a note from this charter in the past decade. PMG comments “Pinholes.”

Cheyenne is probably best known today for its rodeos. The Cheyenne Frontier Days has been held annually since 1897 and is touted as the largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration in the United States (something your cataloger highly recommends attending at least once in your life). Historically, the city is a railroad town. The tracks of the Union Pacific reached Cheyenne on November 13, 1867, and the city rapidly expanded after that, earning the nickname “Magic City of the Plains”. Today, the Union Pacific and BNSF railroads intersect in Cheyenne.
