In March 2021, Stack’s Bowers Galleries sold the most
valuable gold coin issued by the United State for $8,400,000. The 1822 half eagle sold in our
March Las Vegas Auction had only been in three collections in the past 115
years.
The March 2021 Las Vegas Auction also saw Stack’s Bowers
Galleries sell the most valuable half dollar U.S. half dollar when a 1797 Draped Bust
half dollar garnered $1,680,000.

The Pinnacle Collection saw several new world records, including most valuable
Chinese coin ever auctioned. The Mukden
Tiger Pattern Silver Dollar brought in $2,280,000, compared to its $150,000
to $250,000 estimate.
The same offering also set a record for the most expensive
Japanese coin, when the first Oban of Japan sold for
an impressive $1,920,000.
In terms of sets, Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio achieved the
world record for the most valuable modern-era Japanese coin set, when an 1870 Japanese Pattern
set.
Topping off the world records was the 1834-1837
Isabel II Filipino gold coin that set the record for the most valuable
Filipino coin ever sold when it was bid up to $180,000.
Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio also set a new record for the
most valuable non-U.S. coin we have ever sold. The 1825-CNB Ruble sold for
$2,640,000, more than four times its $400,000 to $600,000 estimate.
