Did you know that Stack’s Bowers Galleries will feature a
1711 Mexico “Royal” Presentation 8 Escudos from the 1715 Treasure Fleet in
their January 2021 Auction (an officially sanctioned auction of the NYINC). Lot
22182, graded by NGC as MS-66, is from a group of such Treasure Fleet coins
that are from the Las Colinas Collection.
The Spanish treasure fleet of 12 ships was traveling from
Havana, Cuba to Spain when, on the last day of July 1715, a hurricane struck
near Vero Beach, Florida. These ships were carrying silver, gold, and artifacts,
and there are coins that still wash up on the beach to this day. The Las
Colinas Collection features a number of these 1715 Plate Fleet coins, including
a 1695 8 Escudos graded NGC AU-50 (Lot
22176), a 1700 8 Escudos Cob graded NGC EF-45 (Lot
22177), a 1694 4 Escudos graded NGC AU-55 (Lot
22178), a 1701 4 Escudos graded NGC MS-61 (Lot
22179), and a 1714 8 Escudos graded NGC MS-62 (Lot
