Stack’s Bowers Galleries Has Sold Seven 1894-S Branch Mint Proof Barber Dimes
Did you know that Stack’s Bowers Galleries will be offering
another 1894-S Branch Mint Proof Barber Dime in the December 2020 offering of
the Larry H. Miller Collection, Part Two? There are nine known 1894-S Barber dimes,
and Stack’s Bowers Galleries has had the pleasure of selling all but two of
them. Of those two, the Romito Specimen was consigned to Stack’s 1942 sale
before being withdrawn prior to auction and sold privately to a dealer.
Regarding the Larry H. Miller specimen, CAC founder John
Albanese stated: "Of the 1894-S dimes that I have seen or handled over the
years, the Miller specimen is my favorite. Although not the highest graded
example of this famous rarity, it has the strongest, most collector-friendly
eye appeal." Louis E. Eliasberg purchased this coin from the John H. Clapp
Estate. It then sat in Eliasberg’s collection until it was auctioned by Bowers
and Merena in May 1996 when it realized $451,000.
