In our upcoming October World Paper Collectors Choice
Sale, we are offering a few different South American Proofs that have not been
individually publicly offered since the turn of the century. These pieces,
while listed in the catalog, do not show with prices. We therefore have
estimated them very conservatively.
Two of these rare pieces are from Brazil, an S253p 50
Mil Reis in a PMG EF 40 holder, and a Pick S421p in a PMG AU 53 Holder. The
Pick S253p displays a bank name that reads “No Banco do Brazil.” It shows Saint
Sebastian at left, and a girl with puppies at right. An Explorer’s Arrival is imaged
at center. The other proof is an extra wide format Pick S421p from the Toppan,
Carpenter, and Company as a 100 Mil Reis from the Banco Commercial Da Bahia. It
features a seated man with bales and ships behind him at upper center.
One of the other pieces is a rare 4 Pesos Pick S113p
from Guayaquil, Ecuador with a black eagle at center. PMG comments “pieces
missing” on the AU 55 Net holder due to the two minor pieces of the border
missing at left. The other rare Ecuadorian proof is a Manuel Antonio de
Luzarraga 1 Peso in an AU 53 holder that has brilliant yellow hues. We also
mention a Chilean S318p 5 Pesos in CU63 from the National Bank that shows a
girl at right, a crow at left over its prey, with the counterfoil attached. The
proof is mounted onto blue paper.
All of these proofs and additional rarities will be
available in our October World Paper Money Collectors Choice Online Auction. If
you have questions regarding these lots, please contact Aris@StacksBowers.Com.
