The
A.J. Vanderbilt Collection, featured in our Official Auction of the Spring 2018
Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo, represents a lifetime of numismatic pursuit,
which began at Stack’s in 1936. This impressive cabinet showcases a vast array
of rarities including the R.L. Miles 1874-CC Liberty Seated dime that is tied
for finest known and a Mint State 1795 Heraldic Eagle half eagle.
Included
among the early copper offerings in this collection is an exceptional 1813
Classic Head cent that ranks among the finest known. The deep brown surfaces are accented by
significant traces of tangerine luster in the protected areas. Flow lines from
a late die state are prominent throughout, though the devices are uniformly
bold. Satiny luster adds to the appeal, showcasing the superior preservation
and untouched surfaces.
We
first had the pleasure of offering this cent in Stack’s sale of the Dr. E. Yale
Clarke Collection in October 1975, where it was purchased by the present
consignor. Featured as lot 77 in that sale and graded MS-65, we remarked it “certainly
must be ranked [in] the Condition Census.” This observation has proven true
through four decades of scholarship and research. In his 2000 Condition Census,
Del Bland ranked it as tied for finest known of the Sheldon-292 variety with an
EAC grade of MS-61, while Bill Noyes ranked it as second finest with an EAC grade
of MS-60 in his 1991 census. This exceptional piece maintains this ranking when
discussing the overall 1813 issue, as well. PCGS lists just one other example
in MS-64 BN with only two coins finer in this category at MS-65 BN. For both
early copper specialists and collectors of exceptional early United States type
coins, this Choice 1813 Sheldon-293 cent from the A.J. Vanderbilt Collection is
an opportunity that should not be missed!
