A Marvelous Sale Awaits You!
Baltimore! It’s déjà vu, or as Yogi Berra said, “it’s déjà vu all over
again.” Welcoming friends old and new to Baltimore to participate in our
Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo is a tradition. We have been the
official auctioneer three times a year for longer than we can remember! Each
event, including our June sale, is exciting, and no two are ever alike.
The Blue Moon Collection Part II is the sequel to Part I that we offered
in March. This includes a wide selection of coins from scarce to extremely rare
and popular. Highlights include a Gem 1858/7 Flying Eagle cent, a simply
marvelous Super Gem 1916-D Full Bands dime (without doubt one of the best known
20th century rarities), a Gem Proof 1864 Small Motto two-cent piece, a Mint
State 1901-S quarter, and more. These were bought many years ago by a
client who purchased exclusively from Stack’s and have been off the market for
decades!
The Robert Warner Wolfe Collection brings copper half cents and cents to
the fore, featuring a beautiful AU 1793 Chain cent and including a combination
of popular issues mixed with rarities. Half cents and cents are enjoying great
popularity, and in March our offering of D. Brent Pogue half cents and cents
drew bids from all directions.
The High Rise Collection is a wonderful consignment of Morgan silver
dollars, classic commemoratives, and much more. One of my favorite coins in the
High Rise Collection is a like-new 1857-S double eagle from the S.S. Central
America, a great rarity. Some of the names owners assign to their collections
are quite interesting—a tradition that dates back into the 19th century. The
large and mysterious Vicksburg Collection was one such example, and we give a
nod to a common title in British sales: “The Collection of a Gentleman.”
The Magnolia Collection comprises coins by design types from a span of
many years, a great offering of Proof Morgan silver dollars, and one of the
rarest specialties—New Orleans gold quarter eagles.
Other consignments include a panorama of rare and interesting coins
including gold from early times down to later Proofs, Liberty Seated silver
coins of importance, rare double eagles, patterns, and more. Hard Times tokens
and Civil War tokens include many “rarest of the rare” pieces—featuring a
selection from my very own collection, some being once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities. Check the listings and some of the interesting history we have
provided.
Our Internet section is a great offering in its own right. Tokens and
medals abound as do federal coins and other items, including counterstamps by
Dr. George G. Wilkins, a first-class scamp (as you will read).
Whether this is your first Stack’s Bowers Galleries sale or if you have
been a client for many years, I believe you will find many pieces of interest.
One characteristic of old-time numismatists is that they discover new
specialties and new avenues of enjoyment. Our fine friend Bob Schuman was
prominent in pattern coins, and then went into Hard Times tokens, building
world-class collections. John W. Adams formed a superb collection of copper
cents (sold by us in 1984), then Indian Peace medals, then Betts medals and
other series. Here is the opportunity for you to do likewise!
Baltimore and the Whitman Expo
Baltimore is one of my favorite cities. I lived there as a kid, and my
brother and sister were born there. As an adult I have visited many times,
including in connection with auctioning the Garrett Collection for the Johns
Hopkins University, the Louis E. Eliasberg Collection for the Eliasberg family,
visiting Dr. George Fuld (sometime I will tell about my “adventure” with him
and the Baltimore Coin Club), and more. Wonderful experiences, wonderful
memories.
The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo features hundreds of dealers,
thousands of attendees, and a venue that is very pleasant. The U.S. Mint has a
setup as well—where you can buy modern commemoratives, Proofs, America the
Beautiful quarters, and other coins. Located in the Inner Harbor area of
Baltimore, the Convention Center is close by fine hotels, restaurants, and
shopping opportunities.
In addition to our auction sale sessions we have a large setup in the
dealer bourse. If you want to consign to a future sale, sell some coins on the
spot, or buy some—or just “talk coins”—stop by. Others of us will be at the
auction lot viewing room and at the sale itself. Track us down!
And, on a side note, visit the Whitman Publishing display. If you buy any
of my books on display and would like an autograph, let Dawn Burbank or another
Whitman staffer know.
Plan to Participate!
If you plan to come to Baltimore, the red carpet will be rolled out for
you, as I have indicated. Have a question? We’re here to help—from lot viewing
through the sale sessions to pick-up. If you are staying at home—good news for
you. Using our dynamic Internet site you can participate in virtual reality—in
real time watching our auctioneer at the podium, seeing the item being offered,
and featuring an enticing green “Bid!” button! With advance preparation with us
you can also arrange to bid by telephone on important lots.
Thank you for your interest and
participation in our sale.
All good wishes,
Q. David Bowers
