Our March 2021 Las Vegas currency auction features an
absolutely stunning T-64 1864 $500 Confederate note that is among the nicest
examples we have ever seen of the type. The note is graded Gem Uncirculated 65
EPQ by PMG. Just two examples of the type have been certified finer by PMG.
What makes this example even more appealing is the deep red
tint displayed on the face. The serial number 35797 note falls in the serial
number range for the PF-3 variety which is one of the two dark red tint
varieties known for the type. High grade T-64 notes are rarely found with such
a boldly colored tint as this.
These uniface notes were from the last series of Confederate
currency issued before the rebel nation surrendered to the Union in the middle
of 1865. The design displays the Confederate “Stars and Bars” battle flag at
left with the motto “DEO VINDICE” meaning “Under God, Our Vindicator” displayed
within a belt encircling a soldier on horseback. At right is the portrait of
fallen Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.
With exceptional color and an ideal cut this is easily one
of the nicest 1864 $500s available to collectors and a note that should attract
very strong bidding. Featured in lot 3099, the note is estimated at
$4000-$6000.
