With an original authorized mintage of 99 pieces, from the onset, the 1994 12-ounce gold panda 1,000 Yuan was destined to be an important rarity in the modern Chinese series. Lot 12040 in the Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio April 2015 Hong Kong Sale is the only one graded by PCGS, and among three examples that have been certified by either NGC or PCGS. Marked on the edge as Serial Number 12, this coin will be a centerpiece in an advanced collection of Chinese Panda coinage.
The obverse depicts two panda cubs on the banks of a stream, one is in the water drinking, while the other sits at the water’s edge. Upon a short rise, an adult, presumably the mother, watches and noshes on some bamboo.
The heavily frosted reliefs contrast with deeply mirrored fields, and the surfaces are essentially perfect, justifying the assigned Proof-68 Deep Cameo grade from PCGS. As the only example graded by PCGS, it is a major rarity in the series, and an important opportunity for the specialist.
