Stack’s Bowers Galleries August Official ANA Auction of
World Paper Money is shaping up to be another great sale. Many rarities and
will cross the block, including a Commonwealth of Australia P-A77 1910 5 Pound
note graded Very Fine 20 by PMG.
An incredibly scarce early Commonwealth of Australia note, and
this is the sole example PMG has encapsulated to date. The offered example has
the serial numbers, clause and "Australian Note" superscribed on the
original Adelaide bank note. Three allegorical figures are seen below the
original bank name, with intricate designs in the top left and right corners,
as well as the bottom left corner. Dark brownish-red undertint makes up the
design at center. There is no design on the reverse. These early Australian
notes seldom trade hands, and we would not be surprised if our high estimate is
met or exceeded.
