A frosty 1874 three-dollar gold piece in our upcoming iAuction #3525 will appeal to both type coin enthusiasts and dabblers in the denomination. Graded MS-65 by PCGS, the warm honey-gold surfaces of the coin exhibit lively luster and attractive surfaces that live up to the grade. The strike is about as sharp as ever seen for the type, and soft rose-orange iridescence enlivens the protected design areas. The three-dollar gold series is filled with scarce to rare dates, some of which are unknown in Gem Mint State. Fortunately for today’s collectors, two dates in the series, 1874 and 1878, have seemingly survived in Mint State grades to a larger extent than most of their contemporaries.
