One of Ten Known 1870 Proof Double Eagles Offered in Spring 2022 Auction

In my history in the numismatic industry, nothing gets me more excited than Proof double eagles. Sure, unique, one-of-a-kind items, like the Cowpens Medal from last week are incredible to see and handle, but the look of a well-struck double eagle is unmatched. With that glowing introduction, allow me to present the 1870 Liberty Head double eagle offered in the Rarities Night Session of our Spring 2022 Showcase Auction. This $20 gold is among the finest of 10 known survivors from a mintage of just 35 pieces. It displays a nice cameo contrast between the devices and fields. This coin is graded Proof-64 Cameo and there is only a single example that has been graded finer by PCGS, a Proof-66+ Cameo. It is a formidable rarity and should attract strong bids when it crosses the auction block.

Coins in Motion seeks to enable collectors, bidders, and consignors to accurately appreciate how Stack’s Bowers Galleries coins look in hand. Ultra-high resolution animations depict how luster moves over the coin’s surfaces, while the rotating motion allows for any possible imperfections to be revealed.
