This week’s iAuction, features many interesting U.S. coins in many different price ranges, but particularly close attention should be paid to lot 20099, a beautifully toned 1865 half dime, graded by PCGS as Proof-66. Reflective fields accentuate the deep toning when rotated in a light. Shades of blue, green, gold and copper accentuate the crisply struck devices. Struck in the final year of the Civil War, with a mintage of only 500 pieces, many simply did not survive the ravages of time well. Many examples are hairlined from cleanings by inexperienced (although well intentioned) collectors and non-collectors. As a result, precious few Gem quality examples are available for us to enjoy today. The sale closes on Sunday evening, so be sure to review this and all the other coins being offered in this week’s iAuction.
