We are thrilled to present a Mint State-67 1855 With Arrows half dime in our August 2022 Global Showcase Auction. The surfaces are frosty white, and the overall appearance is very smooth and pleasing to the eye. In addition, the coin is faintly semi-prooflike in the fields. Sharply to fully struck over most major design elements, this lovely Superb Gem will do justice to the finest collection.
The With Arrows Liberty Seated half dime was produced for only three years from 1853 through 1855. The Philadelphia Mint issues dated 1853, 1854 and 1855 account for the majority of coins struck, as well as the vast majority of Mint State survivors. Indeed, locating an example that falls into the MS-60 to MS-64 grade range should prove to be a relatively easy task under normal market conditions. However, the type as a whole is much more elusive in MS-65, and coins that grade MS-66 or finer are very rare and can be challenging to acquire. The piece to be sold in our August sale is an outstanding representative, fully Superb in quality and ranking at the very top of the Condition Census for both the issue and the type. Just two pieces have been graded finer by PCGS for this date and only nine Type 4 Liberty Seated half dimes have received a higher grade. That finer population includes just one Mint State 68. This all points to the present half dime being a rare, prime offering for the registry set collector and Seated coinage enthusiast. We expect that competition will be lively when this lot crosses the block in our August Rarities Night session.
