This week’s iAuction highlight is a truly rare coin: a Proof striking of the 1846 half dollar offered as lot 21061. All Proofs of this date feature the Medium Date logotype. Reflective fields and somewhat satiny devices display a touch of contrast and light toning. Only a few minor marks from non-collector handling result in the NGC-assigned Proof-63 grade. While the number of Proofs struck is unknown, expert opinions range from 25 to 30 pieces, of which perhaps 10 to 15 examples still exist. This coin will be a highlight of the next cabinet that it graces, and should be considered by the specialist collector.
