1836 Gobrecht Dollar from the Collection of a New York Dentist

Like the 1796 16 Star half dollar showcased in this space last week, this week’s coin, a lovely and richly toned 1836 Gobrecht silver dollar, is also from a fresh collection consigned by the estate of a New York dentist. This collector, who for many years bought coins from Stack’s via both auction and retail sale, was most active during the early to mid-1980s. Prior to his passing, Harvey Stack and I began the process of submitting the coins to PCGS and NGC for certification. Earlier this year, the family decided to consign the coins to our 79th Anniversary Sale, being held in conjunction with the inaugural New York PNG Invitational Convention in October.

This coin last appeared in Superior’s session of Auction ’85, cataloged as Judd-60, Second Original striking from early in 1837, where the eagle flies level amid a field of stars. With only the slightest touch of “cabinet friction” on the high points, this deeply toned Proof-58 (PCGS) example is a highlight of the collection and will fit very nicely in an advanced type set or date set of U.S. silver dollars.

The coins from this collection will be featured in our upcoming official auction for the PNG Invitational Show in New York — our 79th anniversary in the rare coin auction business. We are accepting consignments of U.S. coins for this important event until August 25, and we invite you to consign, and your coins will be presented to their finest advantage by the best numismatic auction team in the business. If you are interested in consigning, contact your favorite consignment director as soon as possible.
